Lakadong Turmeric
Origin: Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya.
Description: Widely considered the "world's best" turmeric due to its exceptionally high curcumin content (7% to 12%). It has a deep, vibrant orange color and a very potent, earthy aroma.
Market Value: This is a premium product. Because of its GI (Geographical Indication) tag, it fetches the highest price in pharmaceutical and health-wellness markets.
2. Rajendra Sonia
Origin: Developed by RAU, Pusa (Bihar).
Description: A high-yielding variety (approx. 40–45 tonnes/ha) with a shorter duration of 200–210 days. It is known for being highly resistant to leaf spot and moderately resistant to leaf blotch.
Market Value: It is a favorite among commercial farmers because it balances a high curcumin level (approx. 7–8%) with massive yield potential, making it very profitable for bulk sales.
3. Megha Turmeric-1
Origin: ICAR, Meghalaya (Selection from Lakadong).
Description: This variety was specifically developed to handle high rainfall and hilly terrains, making it very resilient. It has a curcumin content of about 6.8% to 7.2%.
Market Value: It is excellent for organic farming and is well-suited for the climatic conditions in Assam and the North East. It offers a "middle ground" between the premium Lakadong and high-yield commercial types.
4. Megha-2 (Mega One)
Origin: Meghalaya.
Description: Often referred to alongside Megha-1, this variety is typically selected for its even higher tolerance to diseases like rhizome rot and leaf blotch. Its curcumin content is usually around 5% to 6%.
Market Value: While the curcumin is slightly lower than Lakadong, its stability and disease resistance make it a "safer" bet for large-scale plantations where crop loss is a major risk.
